October 22-25

This week in Nature/Science we will read about monocots and dicots and practice categorizing leaves and flowers. We will take a Nature Walk to look for monocots and dicots (flowers are monocots if they have 5 petals; dicots have 6). Our mustard greens, beets, lettuce, carrots, and collards have sprouted, and the children are having fun watching them grow. We are planning to water them with our watering cans this week. In Social Studies we will read “Food and Feasts” in Ancient Rome. We’re also planning to read excerpts from Usborne’s Knights and Castles. In Phonics/Language we will continue to practice narration with the first chapter of Robin Hood. We will sing and recite our Nursery Rhymes and act out “Little Miss Muffet” with props. We’re also planning to read “The Oyster and the Crab” from Tales of Leonardo da Vinci In Math, the children will practice tracing and writing the number 6. We will also practice counting, grouping, adding, and subtracting with candy corn in circle. In Bible, we will learn about the wise man who built his house on the rock, and learn the song. We will also read about how Jesus calmed the storm and made a girl live again. Our Fall Festival is this Saturday, October 27. There will be a prize for the best Medieval costume. You may pre-order tickets or wristbands, or purchase them at the festival (a pre-order form was sent home last week). Tickets are 25 cents each. Wristbands are $15.00 for unlimited fun at all activities. We’re looking forward to having lots of fun and fellowship. Our fall party will be next Wednesday, October 31. The children may wear a costume to school that day (something comfortable is best). You may want to choose a Nursery Rhyme or Medieval theme (nothing scary, please). There will be a sign-up sheet in the hall for food and goodies.
