September 10-14
This week in Nature/Science we will learn about Vascular Plants, and examine a leaf to locate it’s veins and midrib. The children will create leaf rubbings and begin to press and label leaves for their Nature Journals. We will add food and water to our Ant Farm and read, “Honey Ants” in our Christian Liberty Nature Reader.
In Phonics/Language we will practice narration with Two Bad Ants, a wonderful story about the adventures that two ants experience when they sneak inside a home and go exploring. We will sequence the story on the chalkboard, and the children will narrate by drawing a picture. We will read “The Stone and the Road” from The Fables of Leonardo da Vinci. We will also color and sing “Apple Annie” and “Y-E-L-L-O-W” in circle and play a game to match objects to the color words, “red” and “yellow”.
The children are having fun with “Ants” (raisins) in Math. We will practice counting and grouping ants this week. The children will dot paint the number two, practice tracing the numbers 1 and 2, and create the numbers with playdoh.
In Bible, we will learn about how the shepherds visited baby Jesus, read about the Magi, and create little books together.
In Social Studies we will read “Marriage and Home Life” and “Children and Education” from Ancient Rome. The children will also work to create patterns with mosaics just as the children did in ancient Rome.
In Music we will begin to work on a recitation of “The Hayloft” by Robert Louis Stevenson. We will practice singing Psalm 137 with a CD called “Singing the Psalms” that is an example of the beautiful music of the Middle Ages. The children will also learn the motions to “Goodbye, So Long, Farewell, Toodle-oo” from “Two Little Sounds” by Hap Palmer. They will strengthen their sequential memory skills as they act out the song.
