February 21-23

Last week, the children did a great job of planting pansies into a large pot for the atrium that is adjacent to our classroom. We also began to gather leaves and clean up the area. They will practice using a small rake this week and we will continue to plant flowers into pots. We will also compare sedimentary and igneous rocks and paint pictures of aragonite (sedimentary) and agate (igneous).
In Bible we will read “God Keeps the Sun from Setting” (Joshua 10: 6-15) from The Bible In Pictures.
In Social Studies we will begin to learn about the Trojan Horse. We will read “The Wall” and “War” from The Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War.
In Phonics/Language the children will match pictures to the beginning sounds for horse, dog, and cat (h, d, and c). They will sort objects beginning with s and t into letter tubs. We will read Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss and practice identifying the rhyming words. We will listen to The Snowy Day (book/tape) by Ezra Jack Keats. We will practice narration by drawing a picture. The children will also listen to Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (book, tape) and practice sequencing the story.
In Art/Music the children will create a sketch of a pansy. They will practice playing along with rhythm instruments to “Junior Ragtime” by Raffi. We will play musical chairs. We will also practice matching and identifying musical instruments.
