May 13-16
This week in Nature/Science we will read “Twig Anatomy” and “Twig Growth” in Exploring Creation. The children will collect twigs and measure them to determine how much they have grown during the previous spring and summer. We will also read You Hear With Your Ears. We will play a Hearing Lotto game in circle. The children will work with Montessori Sound Cylinders in Fine Motor Center. We will also play a game in circle called “Who’s Talking?”
In Social Studies, we will read “The Crusades” and listen to a reading of “Robin Escapes Capture” from Robin Hood. Our Medieval Field Day last week was a great success. Special thanks to Kim Walker and all of the Moms who worked so hard to plan the event and help to set it up for the children.
In Phonics/Language, we will read “The Bremen Town Musicians” from Great Children’s Stories and sequence the story. The children have been practicing their digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh) by singing a song entitled “What is Your Sound?” We are also practicing our beginning sounds with the Phonemic Awareness Stamps.
In Bible, we will learn about the “fitted feet” that are part of the Armor of God. The children will explore the account of Paul and Silas in prison, and consider how they were ready to share the Gospel at all times. We are also planning to act out the story in class.
In Music/Art, the children will work to create and play handmade instruments. They will practice alternating instruments at the appropriate times as they follow directions to “What to Do When the Music Makers Have the Flu” from Castles, Knights, and Unicorns. They will also create splatter paintings with tempera.
