December 3-7
This week in Nature/Science we will read “Flower Color” in Exploring Creation, and take a Nature Walk to see how many colors of flowers that we might discover around the school. We are also planning to sketch a Poinsettia for our Nature Journals
In Social Studies, the children will learn about how the children of Mexico, Italy, and Germany celebrate the holidays. We will read Cobweb Christmas, an Old World (German) tale about the tradition of tinsel. We will learn about the significance of evergreen wreaths in ancient Rome, and create a La Befana puppet. The children will pretend to be La Befana with their puppets and deliver gifts to Mrs. Hague’s class. We will read The Legend of the Poinsettia, a lovely story about how a little girl’s gift to the baby Jesus turned into beautiful red “stars”.
In Bible, we’re planning to read about the birth of Jesus, our Savior, and sing Christmas songs together.
In Phonics/Language we will read The Gingerbread Man and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. We will listen to The Polar Express (CD). The children will trace and dot paint the letter “J”, and practice identifying their color words (red, blue, orange, and yellow). We will also color and sing Jungle Jim as we practice our “J” words.
In Art, the children will decorate Christmas tree ornaments and Nutcracker ornaments. They will make a Gingerbread Man and create Christmas cards with their friends.
Our Christmas party will be this Thursday at 3:00 (please send a lunch and snack for snack time as usual). We hope that you have a lovely and blessed Christmas.
