Welcome back, and a special welcome to Mandy, who is joining us as a new student. We are xcited about the plans that we have made for the beginning of our new year together. In Nature/Science this semester we will be studying the classifications of animals and their habitats. We will start with amphibians this week and learn about pond life. We will read At the Pond, Frogs and The Garden from Frog and Toad Together. We will also practice matching and learning the names of amphibians with Montessori nomenclature cards.
In Math we will practice counting and grouping apples and apple seeds. We will play and apple counting and matching game on the flannel board, dot paint the number one, and make and
O-N-E book.
In Social Studies we will begin to narrate "Alone in the Woods" from Johnny Appleseed. We will make a Johnny Appleseed puppet and learn the songs "The Lord is Good to Me" and "The Apple Man". We will make a frog with tadpoles to pattern and sort in Art and paint apple trees on the easel. We're planning to practice rhythms using Boomwhackers (tuned percussion tubes) in Music. We will also sing "Five Little Speckled Frogs", "Five Little Ducks", and other puppet songs.
In Bible we will learn about kindness to our friends and read the story, "Patience at School" from A Childs Book of Character Building. We will also listen to a social story called "How to Follow Directions and read a story about patience and kindness from Wise Words for Little People.
We will eat in the lunch room at 11:15. Hot Lunches are available every day this year for $3.75 or your child may bring a lunch. A monthly order form will be sent by e-mail and also placed in your child's folder hanging in the hall. Please send a snack for snack time each day. Be sure to mark it with your child's name and place it in the red collection basket just inside the classroom door. They may also bring an extra bottle of water of a sippee cup to drink in class. Please keep a change of clothes in your child's backpack in case of an accident or spill.
We are planning a field trip to River Legacy Living Science Center on Thursday, September 24 at 12:00. There will be centers to explore and a guided hike. The cost is $10.00 per child. Please let us know if you would like to attend (a sign-up sheet will be posted in the hall.
